Landscape Photo

Journal Entry: Mon Jun 8, 2009, 9:03 AM

How I take my 'Landscape photos'!

  • First of all: I try to think which region or which area in my nearer neighbourhood would be a pretty nice place for a landscape photo. Also, e.g. when your in a airplane, do not just take a photo out of the window and think you have taken a great landscape shot. Wait for the right moment, when you are flying over snow covered mountains or a nice lake-plateau. Mostly a landscape photo is also connected to a panorama photo (a photo composed out of more than one photo)

  • Equipment: Digitalcamera, tripod, in my case I do not have to bring any lenses, well there are none really specific accesoires you need, just bring what you think helps you the most (any filters, special lenses, etc.)

  • Steps: It is a cold rainy day and you really think it is not the weather for taking photos. You are wrong! Even though when the weather does not look good, go outside and try your luck. Rainy days are perfec for B&W landscpae photos. Figure out which place, region or area is the most applicable object for taking as subject for your landscpae photo. Always take care that also something eye catchy is in the photo.

    • The tripod must be used for a landscape photo. It is not possible to hold your hand for more than two photos all the time still and at the same spot. It would be impossible later to cut the photos together for a panorama.

    • Light is not a very big factor of your photo. With using the tripod it is also possible to use long time exposures and so there will be only a small loss of sharpness or the photo gets a little bit blury. But i think this will never affect the result alot.

    • Exposure times should be calculated to the actual light conditions. In my opinion too long exposures are not very good because the bluriness is increasing too much. Of course taking a landscape shot of a range with cloudy sky in the night is senseless and should not be tried.

    • Try not to use zoom, because this is affecting alot the overview over the landscape and if you shoot this type of photo usually you want to show the distance, deepness and largness of a country, area, region or anything else.

    • With including other objects as people, animals or also cars other objects can become more catchy for the viewers eyes. E.G a person in front of a rock face is showing how impressive big those rocks are.

    • Use the natural lines of the landscape.

    • Try to start at the left or right end of your already imagined landscape photo and take as many photos as possible to be able to cut them perfectly together.

    • The End: Use Photoshop, Corel Draw or which editing program you will have to bring those photos together. A nice frame is also useful!

  • Mostly my panorama, landscape shots are cutted together out of more than ten photos!! ( I know some of you will say, Panorama is not landscape photography. But mostly Landscape photography consists of a panorama, even though if it is not mentioned.)

I hope this description of me taking my landscape photos helped you a little bit. Have a nice start in the week!!
